Electrical/Interferential Muscle Stimulation

This type of therapy is performed with a muscle stimulation machine. This machine is hook up to 4 lead wires that have electrodes attached to them. The electrodes are placed over the area of treatment and an electrical stimulus is released from the machine into the electrodes to excite the muscle. The frequency of the stimulation can be altered to treat either acute (recent) pain or chronic (older) pain. The stimulation of the area releases hormones to help promote a natural pain blocker for the pain experienced. Tissue healing and increased blood circulation is also a positive effect from muscle stimulation.
